How Many Video Cameras Can a DVR Support? DVR systems are designed to support a certain number of cameras. Once you exceed that specific number of cameras the user can either go to a larger DVR system unit or install an additional DVR(s) and connect the additional unit(s) through software so the CCTV system works and appears as a single unified CCTV system. Most DVR systems come in three main designs based on the number of channels or cameras the DVR supports. The main DVR system designs that are marketed today are 4 Channel DVR System, 8 Channel DVR System, and the 16 Channel DVR System. These are the three main systems being marketed, but depending on the CCTV application there are single channel DVRs, mobile DVRs, as well as 32 channel and 64 channel DVRs systems.
	What Cameras Can be Used with a DVR? The DVR System regardless of the number of channels can usually support any type of camera. This includes bullet cameras, dome cameras, box cameras, hidden cameras as well as PTZ cameras. The only type of camera a traditional or standard DVR will not support is an IP camera. To have an IP camera work with a DVR System the DVR either needs to be a hybrid DVR or a network video record (NVR).
